TG2 research funded
Published on 03/25/10Research that could pave the way for new therapies for kidney disease and diabetes has been funded by the Wellcome Trust.
Blocking the enzyme trans-glutaminase 2 (TG2) has been shown to prevent kidney disease progression. There are currently no TG2 blockers in clinical use. The Universities of Nottingham Trent and Sheffield have jointly been awarded £320 000 to investigate how TG2 migrates across the cell membrane, a step that could reveal new pharmacological targets. This research is supported by a second project that will investigate whether TG2 is genetically linked to susceptibility to developing type 2 diabetes.
