Funding for tailored cancer treatment
Published on 08/08/11The Technology Strategy Board has announced Government funding totalling £6 million to support research into tumour profiling and data capture so that cancer treatments can be more accurately targeted to individual patients.
The five-year programme has begun with funding of £3.7 million for research into inflammatory biomarkers and business models and value systems. The results will support Cancer Research UK’s Stratified Medicines Programme, which is testing 9000 tumour samples to demonstrate that molecular diagnosis could be scaled up to provide an NHS service.
Funding was provided through the Stratified Medicine Innovation Platform, a partnership formed to support the development of projects with commercial potential. Its partners are the Technology Strategy Board, the Department of Health, the Scottish Government Health Directorates, the MRC, NICE, Cancer Research UK and Arthritis Research UK.
