The evolution of tyrosine‐kinase‐targeted cancer therapies

Abstract

It is now over 50 years since systemic agents were first used to treat malignant disease. Initial results were positive, with cytotoxic chemotherapy achieving success in haematological malignancies, but these successes have not been reproduced for the majority of adult solid tumours, principally because the approach does not target tumour cells sufficiently and exclusively.
