Pramipexole in the treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome

Abstract

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) was first described by Sir Thomas Willis, an English physician, in London in 1672, but has only recently become recognised as a specific disease entity. Although epidemiological studies suggest that it is one of the most common neurological disorders, awareness of the syndrome remains relatively low among both patients and physicians. As a result, diagnosis can often be delayed, or even missed. What is apparent is that RLS can cause substantial morbidity and that, with symptomatic relief now available, there is an increased need to identify and diagnose those patients who require therapy. This article considers and summarises the evidence for treatment with pramipexole (Mirapexin), recently licensed for use in RLS. Copyright © 2007 Wiley Interface Ltd
